Ways To Save Lives
The methods of saving lives are innumerable. Saving any creature from death is a great spiritual act and will awaken an awareness of living beings everywhere.

We can start with simple acts such as moving worms out of harms way when digging in the garden, using a tissue to remove an insect trapped in the bathtub, or refraining from killing an irritating mosquito. Bait worms for fishing are often available where fishing gear is sold and can be saved by moistening the earth in your yard, placing them in a trench and covering them lightly with dirt. To free spiders or other insects found in the home, use a glass and paper to trap and release them. Live traps (Hav-a-heart brand) can be purchased at the hardware store for mice and rats.

Feeder fish can be put in a bowl or pond, crickets can be released in 85 degree or warmer weather and mice can be released in fields or forests. All these are available at local pet shops. Bait fish and shrimp can be purchased at the docks in coastal areas and released into the ocean. In places where lobsters, crabs and clams are gathered for food they can be purchased and gently released back into the water. Remember to unbind the claws of the lobsters. In southern states crawdads and minnows can be released into streams in the same way. Live chickens, quails, roosters etc. can be purchased from some Asian markets.

Every city in America has animal control shelters that euthanize thousands of dogs, cats, birds and rabbits, which can be saved by adoption. Farm animals destined for slaughter such as cows, pigs, sheep, turkeys and chickens can be purchased and set free if one has available land, or by researching and contacting animal rescue organizations such as those listed here.

It is said that when we save the lives of animals it is beneficial to recite dedication prayers. As this practice is performed we can offer the virtue to our loved ones in need and all beings. There are also specific prayers and mantras for this occasion.
